Constipation is that condition that refers to either infrequent or difficult to pass bowel movements.
Constipation is known to result in painful defecation. When this problem is serious the symptoms include the inability to pass stools, gas and bowel obstruction.
Unfortunately, as too many of us already know, constipation is an all too common problem.
This problem has developed over time a wide range of treatments. These include changes in diet, enemas, the use of laxatives and in extreme cases, surgery (often removing portions of the intestinal tract).
Constipation is in itself not a disease, rather it is a symptom. Therefore, successful treatment requires that the first thing to do is to determine the cause.
Treatments include changes in dietary habits, laxatives, enemas, biofeedback, and surgery. Because constipation is a symptom, not a disease, effective treatment of constipation may require first determining the cause.
There are probably two primary causes of constipation:
1. The first is eating a diet that lacks fiber. Eating processed food that lacks sufficient amount of fiber is the single biggest contributing factor behind constipation. Fiber is necessary to stimulate bowel movement and with today's modern diet it is almost nonexistent.
2. The second leading cause of this problem is living a sedentary lifestyle. Physical activity is a prerequisite for peristolsis (the movement of the intestinal tract).
With these two points in mind than the recommendations for alleviating constipation are quite simple and even self evident.
a. Eat a diet that is rich in fiber. This includes whole grains, beans, vegetables and fresh fruit.
b. Implement some type of exercise into your daily routine. It doesn't really matter what it includes. Something as simple as walking for a half hour each day will go a long way to improving your condition.
In the beginning you wish to kick start your program by adding psyllium seeds to your diet once daily. These can be purchased at any health or natural food store.
Also, in the beginning when you are trying to reverse the problem you might consider the use of an herbal colon cleanse. Some of the products on the market have been tested extensively. The right herbal colon cleanse is, of course, 100% natural. This type of remedy is usually safe and effective. Remember though, it is not for long term use!
Keep in mind, that while constipation in and of itself is not a serious problem, if left untreated for an extended period of time it can lead to much more serious problems. People have known for generations that the secret to good health lies within a healthy digestive system.
